Acne Skin and Essential Fatty Acids
Trans fatty acids are nowadays found in most foods and they are industrially created by partially hydrogenating plant oils. The purpose is to add hydrogen atoms to unsaturated fats, making them more saturated. Use of saturated fats extends product ’shelf-life,’ which makes it appealing. Essential fatty acids are now being replaced by trans fatty acids in packaged foods. We consider fatty acids ‘essential’ because of their role in preserving hormonal balance, keeping our emotions in check. A lack of essential fatty acids can cause acne breakouts.
